LED strip, bulb or RGB light bar: the basics of custom-tuned lighting
An RGB LED module combines three color chips, red, green and blue, driven independently by a PWM controller. In theory, combining 256 intensity levels per channel allows for 16.7 million shades, even though the human eye can only actually distinguish a fraction of them. This is the principle behind today’s adhesive strips, connected E27 bulbs, desk bars and facade floodlights.
The most common strips use SMD5050 chips, mounted at a rate of 60 or 120 LEDs per meter, powered at 12V or 24V depending on the circuit length. A 5-meter strip with 60 LEDs/m draws around 14.4W per meter, or about 72W total: less than a classic living-room halogen bulb, for a comparable perceived brightness. The stated lifespan is around 25,000 to 50,000 hours, which corresponds to more than ten years of daily use at 6 hours a day.
RGB vs RGBIC LED strips: a control difference, not a color one
Classic RGB applies a single color across the entire length of the strip at any given moment. RGBIC, popularized by brands like Govee starting in 2020, adds an IC chip every 2 to 3 LEDs: each segment becomes individually addressable, enabling a blue-to-orange gradient on the same meter or a light wave that travels along the strip. For a discreet ceiling outline, simple RGB is more than enough and costs less. For a headboard or accent wall meant to catch the eye, RGBIC justifies the extra cost.
How to choose your RGB LED lighting by room
- RGB LED strip: best reserved for ceiling outlines, furniture or headboards. In a bathroom or outdoors, require a minimum IP65 rating; an unprotected strip burns out at the first contact with moisture.
- Connected RGB LED bulb: screws into a standard E27 or E14 socket and is controlled via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi through an app. Handy for testing a colored ambiance without drilling or rewiring.
- RGB light bar: freestanding or mounted behind a screen, very popular in gaming setups. Models with a screen-sync sensor (such as Govee DreamView or Philips Hue Sync) recalculate the displayed color every 15 to 50 milliseconds.
- RGB floodlight: IP65 or IP66 weatherproof housing for lighting up a facade, tree or terrace from a distance, often with an RF remote to avoid infrared signal dropouts through glass.
Control is via infrared remote (limited range, requires line of sight), Bluetooth app (range of 8 to 10 meters, no router dependency) or Wi-Fi with Alexa and Google Home integration. For a setup that needs to stay usable during an internet outage, a physical RF remote remains the most reliable solution.
An often overlooked point: the maximum length controllable by a single controller rarely exceeds 10 to 15 meters for a 12V strip without a signal amplifier. Beyond that, the color at the end of the strip visibly drifts toward yellow or pink due to insufficient voltage. Plan for an additional power supply if your project exceeds this length.

Do RGB LEDs use a lot of electricity?
A 5050 RGB strip draws about 14.4W per meter, compared to 40 to 60W per meter for an equivalent-brightness halogen tube. With a lifespan of 25,000 hours or more, it pays for itself within the first year of regular use.
